A-B: Suit Could Delay Modelo Deal

A private antitrust lawsuit filed March 22 on behalf of nine consumers could prevent or delay Anheuser-Busch InBev’s $20.1 billion takeover of Grupo Modelo, A-B warned in a regulatory filing Monday. “Even if we, Grupo Modelo, Constellation and Crown Imports resolve the litigation with the Department of Justice, the court in this private action could enjoin the parties from completing the combination with Grupo Modelo, or could further delay it,” A-B stated in the filing. “We intend to defend against it vigorously.” (St. Louis Business Journal)


NYC Files Appeal to Reinstate Big Soda Ban

New York City is asking appeals judges to reinstate a ban on supersized sodas and other sugary drinks, which was struck down by a Manhattan judge the day before it was to go into effect. The city had vowed an appeal and said Thursday that lawyers had filed it late Monday. (Huffington Post)

Pernod Ricard USA has been named “Importer of the Year” by the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, which also awarded “Best in Class” prizes to Pernod Ricard’s Absolut Elyx, Beefeater Gin and Pernod Absinthe. In addition, the company won “Chairman’s Trophy” awards for Jameson 18 YO Blended Irish Whiskey, Redbreast 15 YO Irish Pot Still Whiskey and Royal Salute 21 YO Blended Scotch Whisky at the 2013 Ultimate Spirits Challenge.


Coke Seeks to Patent Sugar-Free Fiber Drink

The Coca-Cola Co. is seeking to patent what it says is a novel sugar-free beverage with fiber. In a U.S. patent application made public today, Coca-Cola says there's a need for healthier frozen carbonated and non-carbonated beverages. It notes that fiber is an essential component to the human diet that is derived primarily from plants. In recent years, fiber supplements and/or food additives have been marketed to consumers for a variety of nutritional and health purposes. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
