New, Greener PET

As a rule beverage marketers looking to bring eco-friendly PET containers to the market have been limited by the expense, availability and performance shortcomings of recycled PET (RPET) resins, but an innovation from PTP Plastic Technologies & Products (Prague, Czech Republic) just might make truly "green" PET a reality.

At Nova-Pack Europe 2006 (October 2-3, Prague, Czech Republic) Dr. George Dadiani, chief operations officer of PTP, will present a paper based on the company's patented process for the cost-effective recycling of post-consumer PET. The resulting new bottle material, PET-M, has a slightly different molecular structure than either virgin PET or RPET, but PTP claims that its physical and mechanical properties are similar to virgin PET and that it even outperforms virgin PET during processing.

Extensive migration testing studies on PET-M in preparation for FDA submission have been positive and PTP reports that it has been successfully converting post-consumer PET from dirty bottles to food-grade preforms since 2003.

Dr. Dadiani's appearance at Nova-Pack Europe, which will be the first public presentation of the innovative technology, is part of a half-day devoted to the topic of PET recycling. For more information on Nova-Pack Europe 2006, contact Schotland Business Research at 609.466.9191.
