Qualicum Bottle & Recycling Promotes Responsible Recycling

BURNABY, British Columbia: Authorized Encorp Pacific (Canada) Return-It Depot, Qualicum Bottle & Recycling, is getting involved in a province-wide initiative to build awareness and participation in BC's beverage container recycling program.

The recycling promotion, dubbed 'Return-It to Win-It', will run for two months from Thursday, May 1 to Monday, June 30, 2008. On top of receiving the usual refund, members of the community get a chance to enter to win a grand prize Broil King barbeque each time they bring in their empty beverage containers to Qualicum Bottle & Recycling. On Saturday, May 3, 2008 one customer won a digital camera. The draw for the camera was part of the depot's Celebration Tour, a family fun event with Return-It Man, Encorp's official mascot.

Qualicum Bottle & Recycling is just one of 42 centers in BC participating in the campaign. Encorp Pacific (Canada) is determined to unite all communities across the province to really embrace proper beverage container recycling practices. "There's no doubt that people know recycling is great for the environment. But we also want them to know that it's easy to make it a routine in their lives, especially with the convenience and proximity of a local Return-It Depot to help them recycle responsibly," says Malcolm Harvey, Encorp Pacific. "Returning even just one aluminum can saves enough energy to light a 100 watt light bulb for three and a half hours. Every little bit helps."

In 2007, Encorp recycled enough aluminum cans to light a 100 watt bulb for every man, woman and child in BC for eight hours a day for about five weeks. They also recycled a total of more than 90,000 tonnes of aluminum, plastic, glass and paper—the equivalent of more than 278,000 barrels of oil. As Harvey explains, "The fewer barrels of oil we use, the less carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere, so what we do does have a direct impact on BC's air quality."
