When retelling the lore of pirates and life on the sea, bottles of rum often come to mind, as well as island destinations, but rarely Rhode Island. Newport Distilling Co., the first licensed distillery in Rhode Island in 135 years, is hoping to re-establish Newport’s previous reputation as the rum capital of the world with its authentic pot stilled Thomas Tew Rum. Named after a 17th century English privateer, aka The Rhode Island Pirate, Thomas Tew Rum brings back the tradition and craftsmanship of the rum distillation process used in Newport back in the early 18th century, when 22 distilleries were operating in the town. Using the same blackstrap molasses, local water and pot still techniques, Thomas Tew Rum is described as a flavorful, single barrel, dark rum with hints of molasses and oak.
