A bottled water brand that combines American spring water with homeopathic Australian flower essences designed to bring about peace of mind and relieve stress, recently debuted in the US.
Balance Water was first released in 2005 when in Australia. As of December 2007, it became available in select Whole Foods Market stores and Hannaford Supermarkets in the Northeastern US, and the company plans to extend its national reach. The water will soon be sold in more supermarkets and smaller stores throughout the Northeast and the West Coast in hopes of eventually expanding its product base nationwide, explains the company.
"We'd like to do complete national coverage," says Martin Chalk, the co-founder of Balance Water and head of the Balance Water Co.'s US operations.
Balance Water contains floral essences that are designed to help calm and focus body and mind in a variety of ways. Water for Traveling, for example, is equipped with essences designed to combat typical travel-related stresses such as delays and jet lag, while Water for the Mind contains ingredients that help with focus and concentration.
These essences do not affect the water’s flavor—it tastes just like normal spring water, says the company.
"We tried very hard not to change the flavor of the water," says Chalk. "Even though we put up to eight flowers in a water we use an organic and natural process to do so. We don't use any chemicals—we use some non-invasive methods in order to sterilize the product and remove the flavor.
"Non-flavored water is the most popular drink in the world," he added.
Being eco-friendly also is of prime importance to Balance Water, so much so that the company has set up bottling stations in New York State's Catskill region and California's Sierra Nevada range so that it can use local water, and therefore can avoid shipping large quantities of water across the world. Only the floral essences are shipped (from Australia) in small, highly concentrated amounts. Balance Water also is researching biodegradable bottle options, all in an attempt to "minimize its carbon footprint," according to the company website, balancewater.com.au.
The company also sells Water for Women and Water for Children, which contain calming essences chosen specifically to benefit these select groups.
