An organic refreshment beverage that has become one of the hottest drinks in Germany and Northern Europe is finally hitting American shores. Developed in 1995 by a German master brewer, Bionade is a non-alcoholic beverage produced through an organic fermentation process that borrows from age-old brewing techniques. Master brewer Dieter Leipold invented Bionade when he discovered a way to stop the production of alcohol during the traditional fermentation process and instead was able to convert the sugar into gluconic acid, an ingredient found in honey. Gluconic acid reacts with minerals in the water and produces minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which are good for overall health. Fruit and herbal essences give Bionade its characteristic tart and fruity accent. Made with natural fruit flavors, Bionade is available in Elderberry, Lychee, Ginger-Orange and Herb flavors. The drinks are made with only a small amount of cane sugar and ingredients are certified as organic by EG-Öko-Kontrollstelle (the organic food board of the European Community).
