Full Sail Brewing, a Hood River, Ore. brewery, has recently released its Slipknot Imperial IPA as part of its Brewmaster Reserve 2008 series, and will soon follow with the release of its Top Sail Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Porter, a new release in its vintage barrel aged series.
Full Sail's Brewmaster Reserve series is ongoing, and changes every two months. The Slipknot was released in January, and will be available until mid-March. It is the first 2008 release in the Brewmaster Reserve series.
"As the name implies, every aspect of this American style IPA is amplified—from the up-front hop aroma and bitterness to the big malt body," says John Harris, Full Sail's brewmaster.
For the vintage barrel aged series, the brewer takes a batch of beer and barrel ages it. Generally, the series is made up of beers that keep well in cellars, and therefore, beers that age well.
In the case of Top Sail Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Porter, the beer is aged in bourbon barrels. This beer was initially released in February 2007, but a portion of it was set aside to age in the bourbon casks, which are from Kentucky. It will be available in early February.
"Dedicated to the art of wood and barrel aging, we brew in small batches with patience and care. That's why Top Sail Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Porter is available in very limited quantities," says Harris.
The Brewmaster Reserve beers are available in 22-ounce bottles and on draft at specialty beer stores and pubs throughout the Pacific Northwest, as well as at Full Sail's Tasting Room and Pub, located in Hood River. Other Full Sail beers are available in 19 states nationwide.
