Krones’ New Lightweight
With a weight of 8.8 grams for a 500-ml bottle, Krones has set new standards for PET containers in the 0.5-l class. The company says the bottle, which was premiered by Krones AG, Neutraubling, Germany, at K 2007, is a conventional bottle with an  appealing lightweight design. The newly-developed bottle, Krones claims, provides a weight reduction of 28 to 45 percent compared to other PET containers on the market, plus comparably higher savings in terms of material and cost.

Is it Glass, or PET?
Image The 0.75-liter bottle from PET Engineering recalls the silhouette of a typical bordolese wine bottle: cylinder shape, pronounced shoulder, concave bottom. It is closed by an aluminium cap and a B.V.S. finish similar to those now used for screw caps on glass wine bottles.

The Italy-based company says the bottle involved a painstaking effort on design, perfected down to the smallest detail to transfer the same feeling of freshness and flavor that is typical of glass.

Special in-depth research was carried out on the technical side, starting from shelf life and with particular regard for organoleptic features. The company later looked at the various requirements in connection with environmental conditions, type of bottling and handling.

Once the technicalities were worked out, PET Engineering collaborated with Constar Inter-national, a US-based company that developed a preform designed ad hoc and made up of a barrier material in monOxbar monolayer.
