David Grinnell joined founder and brewer Jim Koch in 1988, three years after the first case of Samuel Adams Boston Lager rolled out of the brewery, and he has been Koch's right hand man ever since. In addition to overseeing the brewing, leading the brewing team and developing new recipes, Grinnell travels the globe researching and sourcing the world's finest ingredients, including the brewery's signature Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops. Over two decades he has forged friendships and business relationships with brewers, hop and barley farmers and beer aficionados in many countries. Announcing the promotion of Grinnell from brewing and quality director to vice president of brewing, Koch said, "For almost 20 years David has consistently set incredibly high standards for everyone who works with him. I am proud of every beer that we've ever brewed, and we owe much of this to the passion that David brings to his job. "For a brewer at Sam Adams one of the best parts of a day at the brewery is Taste Panel, where we sit down and taste beers," Koch continued. "Some days we will taste new recipes we are developing; other days it will be batches of existing beers. David has an incredible palate and impressive brewing creativity, which helps us develop new, wonderful styles of beer for our drinkers year after year." Grinnell, explaining his passion for his job, said, "I love beer. I love hand selecting the ingredients, brewing beer; creating and perfecting new beer recipes. And of course I love tasting and drinking beer. I believe in the nobility of beer, and I appreciate having a simple mandate from Jim: Make the best beers anybody's ever tasted. I don't know who said it first, but it's true Jim never says, 'how much does it cost?' He only asks, 'How's it going to taste?'" |
