Spear Opens Plant in South Africa

Spear has begun operations at its new 5,500-square-meter facility in Johannesburg, South Africa, which will produce pressure sensitive, cut-stack and OPP wrap labels on a wide and narrow web press complement, highlighted by a new Cerutti 960/2 1000 mm gravure press, according to the company.

Since 1982 Spear has been a global leader in the development of pressure sensitive labeling systems for the food, beverage and personal care industries. Spear currently has three manufacturing sites in the US, one each in Europe and South Africa along with customers in 35 countries. Spear generates annual revenues of $140 million from the sale of pressure sensitive labels.

Spearsystem Packaging Africa, will operate as a subsidiary of Spear Group Holdings Ltd., and include BEE (Black Economic Empowerment) ownership partner Lidonga.

In announcing the South African opening, Rick Spear, CEO of Spear said: "We are excited about Spear's targeted focus on the global expansion of beverage labelling. Spear continues to experience strong global growth and we will continue to invest in the development of innovative labelling technologies and manufacturing systems to maintain our current position as a leading supplier of pressure sensitive labels to the beverage and consumer goods industries."

Spear will celebrate their South African entry with an open house on Dec. 5 from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.  The facility is located at: Bantry Park, 41 Jansen Road, Jet Park, Boksburg 1469, South Africa.
