By now, the beverage world is used to hearing about New Age beverages that are born in the kitchen—Honest Tea, vitaminwater, Metromint—but how about in the garden?
Alaya Laufer-Cahana, M.D., a pediatrician, got the idea for her enhanced water while working in her garden in 2005. Like many of her predecessors, Laufer-Cahana, a passionate cook and lifelong vegetarian, was exploring new alternatives to sugar-laden and artificially flavored beverages. She found the answer in her herb garden and launched a line of herb infused waters.
Ayala's Herbal Water, available in six refreshing flavors—cinnamon orange peel, lemongrass mint vanilla, jasmine vanilla, lavender mint lemongrass thyme, cloves cardamom cinnamon and ginger lemon peel—use herbs that have been known to aid digestion, improve blood glucose levels, strengthen immunity, reduce insomnia, stress, and help maintain healthy LDL cholesterol levels.
In addition, the naturally enhanced healthy beverages have no calories, artificial sweeteners, flavors or colors, and no chemical preservatives.
"The water's herbs are also a rich source of antioxidants and other beneficial compounds naturally occurring in plants," she says. "Full of flavor, yet free of calories, artificial sweeteners and artificial chemicals, these naturally fragrant beverages evoke happy feelings, like a breeze in a sunny garden."
According to the company, Herbal Water, co-founded by Albert Cahana, various studies have shown that herbs are loaded with antioxidants that deliver a wide array of health benefits. One study published in the Journal of Nutrition from 2004 discussed that herbs can contain high levels of antioxidants, in many cases levels that are much higher than many fruits and vegetables.
Also, health experts agree that drinking water can help people better manage their weight because it naturally quenches hunger, notes the company, adding that many dietitians advise consumers not to mistake hunger for thirst, and to drink at least 64 ounces of water each day to prevent dehydration.
"Most people have heard for years about the health benefits of fruits and vegetables, but are unaware that they can get the same benefits from herbs," says Laufer-Cahana. "Herbal Water is a delicious beverage that is 100 percent good for you and delivers all the benefits of herbs too." |
