Honest Tea Supports Greener Commuting
Thursday, 09 August 2007
Bethesda, Maryland-based Honest Tea is extending a challenge to Montgomery County, MD employers to join the company in supporting employee health and wellness. Honest Tea has partnered with bicycle manufacturer Jamis Bikes to provide discounted bicycles to employers who distribute at least fifteen bikes to their employees this summer. Each employer who takes up the challenge between now and July 31 will receive one free case of Honest Tea to share with their employees for each bike they give away.

Honest Tea extended this challenge at the Alliance for Workplace Excellence Awards in June. The Alliance for Workplace Excellence is an organization that provides a variety of services that allow Montgomery County employers to build excellent places to work.

The Alliance also recognized Seth Goldman, co-founder, president and TeaEO of Honest Tea, with the 2007 Visionary Leadership Award. Honest Tea as a company will receive a 2007 Workplace Excellence Award.

“By getting more people out of their car seats and onto their bike seats, we hope that this challenge will help employees get healthier as well as reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the DC area,” says Goldman. Bicyclists and walkers arrive at work with less stress than those who commute by automobile. The Berkeley Wellness Letter reports that chronic exposure to traffic congestion lowers frustration tolerance, increases baseline blood pressure, negative moods, and aggressive driving habits. In contrast, bicyclists and walkers often report feeling relaxed and more alert after arriving at work, making them ready for a more productive day .

Goldman is an entrepreneur who has made a commitment to work-life balance and environmental sustainability part of his everyday work and life. Nine years ago, he founded Honest Tea, a company that is now a leader in the bottled organic beverage industry. His ongoing commitment to employee work-life balance has paid off in fueling the company’s growth. In fact, Honest Tea has enjoyed a 65 percent compound annual growth rate since its start in 1998. The company was the first to market Certified Organic bottled tea as well as Fair Trade bottled tea and has initiated creative partnerships to support non-profit organizations, economically disadvantaged communities and environmental initiatives. Honest Tea was named to the WorldBlu List of Most Democratic Workplaces in 2007 and also received the Workplace Excellence Award from the Alliance for Workplace Excellence in 2006.

Jamis Bicycles rolled out its' first Earth Cruiser bicycle in 1979 and has since built a reputation as a brand unmatched in performance, value and style. Jamis bicycles are sold in the U.S. from coast to coast and in over 40 countries worldwide.

According to the company, this call to action is consistent with Honest Tea’s ongoing commitment to employee health and wellness and work-life balance. In June, Honest Tea gave each of its 50 employees a free Jamis Bike to use to bike to work, or whenever they choose, to increase fitness and exercise levels while enjoying time outdoors.

Honest Tea has also recently launched a partnership with Jamis to give away over 500 bikes (Jamis Ranger SX) to its customers via a sweepstakes being held during June and July at various retailers throughout the country.
