Southern California may have produced some of the best-known craft breweries in the modern age, but the region itself usually gets overshadowed by the likes of the Pacific Northwest and Colorado as beer meccas. Beer journalist Jay Sheveck is hoping to change all that with his new publication, The Beer Guppy's Guide to Southern California.
Inside its pages, Sheveck (aka, the Beer Guppy) details more than 300 spots that further the business of beer.
"It seems to be that Southern California is greatly overlooked in terms of good beer," says Sheveck, a long-time resident of the region whose articles and photographs have appeared in publications such as American Brewer magazine, American Breweriana Journal, BEERWeek, Brewing News, Celebrator Beer News and Market Watch. "It was about time we had a guide."
Sheveck's a fan of the web guides like BeerAdvocate.com and RateBeer.com, but, as he says, "They can't travel with you."
Sprinkled throughout the guide are highlights about the area's beer pioneers, historic beer sites and a whole host of wacky beer oddities.
The Beer Guppy's Guide to Southern California represents the culmination of five years of work for Sheveck and he promises to publish four more guides for other regions of the United States. |
