2014 Vehicle Preview

From vans, pickups and various configurations of delivery trucks, to powerful over-the-road tractors, manufacturers are offering beverage distributors increased efficiency and new fuel options, including natural gas, hybrids and all-electric vehicles. There also are improvements in performance and driver comfort.

Here are some of the newest beverage trucks for the year ahead.


Name: Mitsubishi Fuso Canter FE Trucks
Configuration: Class 3-5 Cabover Medium-Duty Truck
Primary Application(s): Urban Route Delivery
Key Features – Details:
The Canter FE Series medium-duty trucks are available in 12,500 lb., 15,995 lb. and 17,995 lb. GVWRs, with body/payload capacities of 7,285 lb., 10,505 lb. and 12,505 lb. respectively. All are powered by a turbocharged diesel engine coupled to an automated manual transmission. The cabover configuration provides optimal maneuverability for urban deliveries, Mitsubishi says, as well as superior sight lines for added safety. All include a three-year/unlimited mileage bumper-to-bumper warranty plus a five-year/175,000-mile power train warranty.

Configuration: Class 6/7 Conventional Trucks or Tractors

Key Features – Details:
Highly versatile, extremely durable. Non-CDL configurations are available; manual, automated and automatic transmissions. SmartNav infotainment system is optional in an ergonomic, comfortable cab. The Model 337 is available with the PACCAR PX-9 (260-350 hp) and both can be equipped with the PACCAR PX-7 (200-325 hp). Both models are available in electric hybrid configurations.


Name: Nissan NV Cargo Van
Configuration: Class 1 Cargo Van

Key Features – Details:
The NV standard roof cargo van has 234.1 cu. ft. of cargo space, allowing the flat loading of two 40-in. by 48-in. pallets. Six floor-mounted D-rings are tested to handle up to 1,124 lbs. of cargo per ring. Heavy-duty vehicle has a fully boxed full-length ladder frame. Van offers a truck-like interior that creates sweeping exterior views and a B-pillar that’s farther back to enhance visibility.
 

Name: Navistar International ProStar
Configuration: Class 8 Tractor
Primary Application(s): Local/Regional Bulk Delivery
Key Features – Details:
ProStar with MaxxForce 13 engine with SCR (selective catalytic reduction) offers fleets the efficient power of a big bore engine with lighter weight components to maximize payload. Design and compacted graphite iron block construction make it one of the lightest weight 13-liter engines in the industry, Navistar notes.


Name: Ford F-Series Super Duty
Configuration: Class 1 Pickup
Primary Application(s): Merchandising, Sales, Service
Key Features – Details:
2015 model due out next year for heavy-duty pickup towing and payload capacities. Super Duty Platinum is available in F-250, F-350 or F-450 pickup models with either the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel engine or the 6.2-liter V8 gas engine. Offered with a truck-specific version of voice-controlled connectivity SYNC system with MyFord Touch.
 

Name: Kenworth T680 52-inch sleeper
Configuration: Class 8 Sleeper Cab
Primary Application(s): Regional Bulk Delivery.
Key Features – Details
: The new Kenworth T680 52-inch mid-roof sleeper is well-suited for regional hauling applications. Configuration enables beverage customers to benefit from the T680’s fuel efficiency, performance, styling and comfort. Features a three-piece aerodynamic hood, panoramic windshield, stamped aluminum cab and robust door.


Name: Hino 195h Hybrid Dual Cab
Configuration: Class 5 Cabover Truck

Key Features – Details:
Diesel-electric hybrid available in a double cab configuration. Winner of American Truck Dealers’ 2013 Medium duty commercial truck of the Year award, the 195, which is available in diesel or hybrid, and single and double cab models, has a new preventive service care program for their 195 diesel model trucks called HinoCare.
 

Name: Ram ProMaster Van
Configuration: Class 1 Cargo Van
Primary Application(s): Merchandising, Sales, Hot-Shot Deliveries
Key Features – Details:
New Chrysler Ram ProMaster 1500/2500/3500 models feature exclusive front-wheel-drive engineering, two roof heights, four overall lengths, and three wheelbase lengths. The 3.6-L Pentastar V6 is a Ward’s Top 10 Engine winner. Also features Electronic Throttle Control and integrated cruise control.


Name: 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van
Configuration: Class 1 Cargo Van

Key Features – Details:
The 2014 Sprinter Van has a new look and is even more economical, safer and environmentally friendly. The new standard engine is a 4-cylinder diesel engine with a 7-speed automatic transmission, with the familiar V6 diesel power train available as an option.


Name: Freightliner Cascadia Evolution
Configuration: Class 8 Daycab
Primary Application(s): Local/Regional Bulk Delivery
Key Features – Details:
Powered by a Detroit engine, Cascadia Evolution delivers up to 7 percent additional improvement in fuel economy over an EPA 2010-compliant Cascadia equipped with a first generation aerodynamic package, and 5 percent compared with a Cascadia equipped with the latest aerodynamic upgrades.
 

Name: Volvo Natural Gas VNL
Configuration: Class 8 Conventional Daycab
Primary Application(s): Local/Regional Distribution
Key Features – Details:
The natural gas-powered VNL model is equipped with a 12-liter, 400 horsepower, 1,450 lb-ft. torque Cummins Westport ISX12 G engine that uses compressed or liquefied natural gas and requires only a three-way catalyst to meet EPA 2010 emissions standards. Daycab offers a large, 123-in. bumper-to-back-of-cab.


Name: Isuzu N-Series Diesel
Configuration: Low Cab Forward Truck

The Isuzu N-Series LCF families of vehicles are class 3-5 trucks and the only low cab forward lineup that includes two EPA certified diesel engines and a gasoline engine alternative. The ECO-MAX diesel power train provides up to 20 percent better fuel efficiency than previous generation models without the added cost of hybrid technologies. The engines provide B10 service life durability of 310,000 miles. Isuzu trucks provide support features that help reduce operating costs, improve performance, manage risk and help protect your truck investment, says the company.

Configuration: Full-Frame Two-Passenger Cutaway Van

With a payload of 9,156 lbs., the Chevrolet Express Cutaway van is known for flexibility and durability of its three available wheelbases, single or dual rear wheels and three engine choices, including the powerful Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel. Designed to meet more stringent government emissions requirements, the LGH Duramax employs a robust EGR cooling system, along with revised turbocharger tuning that helps enhance EGR performance. It also has a large-capacity selective catalytic reduction system.


Name: Smith Newton Series N2000/80

The Smith Newton Series N2000/80 from Smith Electric is a zero emission vehicle with a 154-in. wheelbase, 26,000 lb. GVW, and 80 kWh. Its payload is over 11,000 lbs., and it has a range of up to 100 miles on a charge. The Newton is the world’s largest all-electric commercial vehicle, available globally as a chassis cab and configured for use in a wide range of applications. Smith Electric has produced more than 700 of its all-electric Edison and Newton trucks, cumulatively generating more than 5 million road miles.
