ProMat ’13 Recap

Thousands of supply chain professionals braved Chicago’s wintry weather from January 21-24 to attend ProMat 2013. Nearly 800 exhibitors were on hand with their productivity solutions on the 300,000-square-foot show floor at McCormick Place. To make it easier for attendees to find the solutions they needed, the show floor was divided into solution-specific sections: manufacturing and assembly solutions; fulfillment and delivery solutions and information technology solutions. Here are some of the highlights:

Dematic introduced a set of warehouse solutions for high-density pallet storage. Each solution is engineered to support production and distribution operations that need an effective way to receive, store, and ship full or mixed case pallet loads. The solutions have these attributes: high density, compact, accurate, real time, and automatic. This means lower operating costs, reduced building/land costs, precise load sequencing, FIFO/LIFO rotation or whatever business rules apply, improved order accuracy, real time control of inventory, and less labor to operate.

Emerson says its System Plast 2508 and 2630 series belts can be used in a variety of heavy duty applications including automobile, car wash and high-weight material handling applications. In standard LFG material, the 2508 series has a max load capacity of 5480 lbs/ft.

Big Joe
Big Joe brand forklifts showcased an innovative new type of industrial truck called  “Joey.” The Big Joe J1 “Joey” combines attributes of elevating work platforms, order pickers and tuggers in a compact and capable vehicle design. Developed as an alternative to rolling ladders or other larger equipment, the Joey can support tasks from general overhead maintenance to order picking. The new Joey can elevate an operator 126” from the floor.

Intelligrated showcased its latest conveyor and sortation technologies, order fulfillment systems, software and services. Among the highlights of Intelligrated’s exhibits: High throughput conveyors and sortation units; high-accuracy e-commerce and multichannel operations and software solutions designed to help distribution and fulfillment operations manage people, processes and equipment in real-time. The company also showcased its latest Alvey Robotics solutions.

Cubic Design
Cubic Designs, the premier mezzanine manufacturer, showcased their new AIB-audited Food Grade Platforms at ProMat 2013 in Chicago, ideal for your food and beverage processing and packaging facilities, the company says. These platforms are designed for facilities with USDA and FDA regulations, are professionally engineered and feature closed shapes and stainless steel finishes.

Ryson’s Mass Flow Spiral Conveyors have always been about vertically conveying product in mass. But with the addition of the High Capacity models, Ryson has taken vertical mass flow conveying to new heights. With added volume capacity and extended height ability, the Mass Flow Conveyors can handle the demands of even the most high performance bottling plants, the company says. A big advantage is their small footprint. They can handle full and empty bottles, cans and jars.

Other highlights of this year’s ProMat included the Minit Charger 12 from ECOtality, Inc., dubbed “the fastest opportunity charger ever built for the material handling industry;” Rite Hite’s GateKeeper Barrier System Safety Gate, a reciprocating barrier that creates a controlled access area in which workers can safely load and unload from the edge of a mezzanine, pick module or other elevated work platform; the Jungheinrich Warehouse Navigation system uses transponder RFID to control guided Jungheinrich very narrow-aisle lift trucks within the aisles of a warehouse and TZA announced a mobile app for its ProTrack Labor System.
